My New Studio

I finally managed to get a studio here in Jackson, MS!
It's just a couple rooms that I share with another girl but I'm really enjoying the space so far though I really need to figure out something for ventilation. Below are images of my sections of the studio.

Yes, I know the images above are a little funky but I had to get creative. Just starting out as an artist I find myself very limited in resources (but I'm sure that's just the nature of any venture). The up side of this is that it forces me to come up with creative solutions. So, I can only use my 50mm lens (because it's the only one I have) which makes taking wide angled shots impossible to catch in small spaces. So I tend to just stitch my images together in photoshop. The effect can be unexpectedly nice.

Midtown is a small, fringe community of artists and artisan businesses located next to the Fondren arts district and Millsaps College. A former haunting ground of hookers and druggies (just kidding… kinda…) Midtown has become a starting point for revitalization in the downtown Jackson community. The Hangar is a newly acquired building for Midtown Partners, Inc.  (a business dedicated to the revitalization of the community) and it's not the greatest, but it's on its way.

My neighbors are pretty awesome with Purple Word Center for the Book and Paper Arts founded by Sandra Murchison downstairs, along with Midcity Print with Ian Hanson and Leslie Galloway. I also have a studio mate Nora Costley, but soon it'll be just me as she's about to head out on another adventure. I don't know what I'll do with a whole two rooms to myself but I hope to get another artist in here soon since having the whole rent payment to myself will be murder on my savings.

I've been here since last October and it took a while, but I'm finally set up to actually make my ceramics. While production of work has been sporadically steady, I haven't managed to fire anything yet. I've talked to so many people about finding a kiln to use and nobody's been able to pull through until recently. A friend from college April Shelby was so awesome, she was awarded a grant to purchase her own electric kiln and she's been so helpful to me lately.

Midtown has been an amazing experience so far and I can't wait to share all the awesome things I have coming up. I'll be sure to keep you all posted.

November 22nd in Atlanta, GA

With Ms. RaccoonSpoon

I'm so excited.

Unfortunately, these aren't my images since I didn't have a camera
but it was an amazing experience!

We were just to the right of the stage and were about ten people back so we got an awesome spot.

This show had everything: confetti, columns of fire, Mary Lambert (in a gorgeous black dress), Ray Dalton, Wanz, "White Walls", an "And We Danced" encore, a couple (two lovely ladies) got engaged on stage right after Same Love, and a cappella version of Otherside. Macklemore even freestyled for us.

Yes, it was a good night with my very lovely bestie :)

This was my first family reunion ever.

It was like meeting a party full of weirdos that I was supposed to love immediately.

I think it went well enough though.

One of my favorite parts was seeing the photos from previous reunions, as well as random pictures of family members from long ago. It was all very illuminating. This first photo was without a doubt my favorite. So stylin'. Love those fur coats.

And here we are now. I personally think photos used to look so much more badass back in the day...

Thesis in Review

Finally, I'm finished editing all those pictures! There were so many to shuffle through it was exhausting.

Artist's Statement:

Secrets.

Painful, shameful, humiliating: these memories shape us more than we know.
They help define us in ways we hardly realize.

But what do we hide behind, how do we cope?
Addiction, depression, obsession, compulsion, anger… We all use something.

We hide the ugly behind thick walls.

I wanted desperately to be someone else. To erase the person I was; the one who wasn’t good enough.

But we cannot erase. We can only hide, only avoid, only numb.
Our secrets are still there. We have only to look through the cracks to know it’s true.

Thanks to everyone who went to the show! Hope you enjoyed!

Last Day of Class… Ever (Kinda)

Just had my very last class of college ever. Undergrad at least, I have every intention of going back to school for my MFA.

I've been horribly depressed about the whole leaving school thing, and the leaving all my friends thing, and the moving back home thing, but somehow I've managed to get everything done. Now, if none of my teachers fail me, I'll be walking this Saturday!

Anyway, I thought I'd share what I did for my Art & Film final. Nothing fancy, but I made teaser posters for Hayao Miyazaki films. If you haven't seen any of them, you need to change that pronto.

Invitations

For thesis we have four meetings with our committee members. Our teachers are very easily distracted throughout the day (or at least that's what it seems like) so we have to send out invitations that will somehow catch their eye. It's also a unofficial competition for who can make up the most creative invitations. So I had a few test tiles laying around and decided to use those. Sharpie works well but it'll rub off eventually, I figure when it does they'll at least have a pretty test tile.

Thesis So Far...

The work so far! I still have a long way to go and it will not look like this in the end I'm sure...

Thesis Poster

Hello!
For thesis class we spend the whole semester planning for the show and everyone is assigned a job to do. My job is to design posters, postcards, etc. We only just decided on a name two weeks earlier and now we voted on this design yesterday. Yay! I'm pretty much done with my job now. I just have to add the last finishing touches and get it to our wonderful teacher and mentor Brent Funderburk.

Commune as in 'communicate'; not as in a gang of hippies.

Thesis Group

We're over four weeks into our thesis semester and I was lucky enough to get the job of designing out poster. Which means I get to see everyones' finished work so far and I have to say that I was really impressed by some people! So here's a sneak peek of our thesis show 2012!
^Emily Hobart (That's me!)

I know it'll be awesome but I still have a ton of work to do until then. Oh, and speaking of, I'll be sure to put up a post about how my work is coming along!

Until then, have a lovely and fulfilling day!
